Summary of UK Performance

As the UK lockdown enters its 10th week, the government continues to put plans in place to ease the restrictions with schools, car showrooms and outdoor markets all opening on the 1st June.

  • In the latest week, which includes the Saturday sales for the recent Bank Holiday weekend, sales reached £2.44b; £256m higher than the same time last year
  • The Convenience and Online channels maintain their importance in the UK retail environment but Supermarkets gained as consumers shopped more in this channel in the build up to the Bank Holiday
  • Since the beginning of 2020 and predominantly since the start of COVID-19, UK Retailer sales are £2.815b higher than last year, driven by Ambient (+£993m) and BWS +(£631m) departments
  • The additional £256m Total Store sales is +11.7% vs year ago and is driven by an increased Grocery spend of £231m
  • Grocery sales continue to drive the Total Market Value sales as Non-Grocery sales maintain it’s decline
  • Frozen, BWS and Fresh Meat sales continue to drive greatest growth, whilst Petcare and Bakery are impacted with declines across both Unit and Value
  • Reduced demand for Food to Go categories; Sandwiches, In-Store Deli’s / Bakeries mean they continue to feature in the sub categories seeing the greatest decline. Laundry Detergent and Toilet Tissue feature following on from the panic buying spree in March/April

End of the 10th week of the UK lockdown and the easing of restrictions in England continue. Current risk level remains at 4 but is close to 3, allowing restrictions to be eased and continued monitoring with the next update on the 15th June.

  • FTSE 100 continues to improve since last week as restrictions ease and workers are being allowed back to work
  • From 1st June, people in the UK can spend time outdoors, including in private gardens and other spaces in groups of up to six people Professional athletes can start training / competing following strict guidelines.
  • The UK public cannot: Visit friends and family inside their homes, Stay overnight away from your own home, Exercise in indoor gyms or go swimming in a public pool
